Islington Council is undertaking a significant structural review, with plans for a management redesign aimed at streamlining its operations. The proposed changes, discussed at a recent Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting, focus on the council's staffing structure, particularly at senior and middle management levels.

Councillor Paul Convery, Executive Member for Finance and Performance, acknowledged that the council currently operates with a slightly top-heavy organisation. He explained that a strategic decision has been made to keep vacant posts, especially in senior roles, as a method of budget management. This approach is being carefully monitored to assess its broader implications beyond financial considerations.

The committee was informed that the council is considering a fundamental redesign of the overall council. The primary objective of this redesign is to foster a more streamlined structure. This aims to empower frontline staff by granting them greater autonomy and reducing perceived over-management from higher levels.
