Hackney's vibrant markets are a significant contributor to the local economy, attracting millions of shoppers and generating substantial revenue.
At a Skills, Economy and Growth Scrutiny Commission meeting on Monday, Councillor Susan Fajano-Thomas, Cabinet Member for Regulatory Services, reported that Hackney markets attract over 7.1 million shoppers annually and contribute over £20 million to the local economy. This was part of an update on licensing, the night-time economy and markets.
Councillor Fajano-Thomas highlighted the development of a market strategy for 2023-2028 and efforts to promote street markets and support traders. The council licenses and supports over 3,000 small and micro businesses, offering incubation, digital tools, and tailored support to help them thrive amidst economic challenges. She also mentioned the open market platform developed with the GLA to transform trader access and service delivery. This platform is a London-wide app that allows traders to see available stalls in any London market, eliminating the need to contact individual boroughs.
