Newham Council has appointed Maria Christofi as its new Chief Executive and Head of Paid Service, a decision confirmed at a full council meeting on Monday, July 13, 2026.

Christofi, who brings over 25 years of local government experience to the role, was recommended by the Chief Officer Appointment Committee, chaired by Mayor Forhad Hussain. The selection process involved an extensive search and assessment by recruitment consultants Gatenby Sanderson, including shortlisting candidates and various stakeholder panels before an interview with the committee.

Mayor Hussain expressed his delight, stating that Christofi brings over 25 years of local government experience. A proven track record of leadership and transformation and has already made a significant contribution to Newham. He added, I look forward to working closely with Maria and to continue to deliver our ambitions for Newham, strengthening our partnerships and providing very best services for our residents.

Councillor Ali also congratulated Christofi on her appointment, reflecting an expectation of positive impact on the council's operational efficiency and service delivery. Outgoing Interim Chief Executive Paul Martin, who was formally thanked for his service, expressed optimism for the future, stating, I think that in the Mayor and in Maria, Newham has got leaders who recognise that no single person can achieve anything in local government.

Christofi will face significant challenges, including financial constraints as local government navigates a very difficult time financially. She will also need to address rising costs in demand-led services such as children's services and social care, alongside a continual temporary accommodation crisis, driven by a rise in homelessness and a shortage of affordable homes. Furthermore, the council needs governance improvement and continuous improvement in its scrutiny work, particularly in light of serious failings and requiring fundamental improvements across housing services identified by the Regulator of Social Housing.

Paul Martin is stepping down as Interim Chief Executive, with no indication of future involvement with the council. His successor, Christofi, will be supported by the council's understanding that collective effort is key to achieving its goals.

The appointment was agreed with one abstention from Councillor Keeling.
