Hammersmith and Fulham Council held its Full Council meeting on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, where councillors paid tribute to former leader Anthony Chapman.
Mayor Councillor Sharon Holder announced the death of Mr. Chapman, who served as leader of the council from 1966 to 1968. Councillor Nikos Souslous delivered a tribute, detailing Mr. Chapman's life and contributions to local politics. Mr. Chapman was first elected in 1962. He was born in 1930 and after completing his national service, he pursued a career as a teacher, eventually becoming a school headmaster in Newham. He also served as a governor of Henry Compton school in Fulham.
Mr. Chapman led the council during a significant period in British history, notably during England's 1966 World Cup victory. He passed away on July 15, 2026, meaning he lived for approximately 58 years after his tenure as council leader.
A minute of silence was observed in his memory.
