Sutton Council's Housing, Economy and Business Committee has heard that efforts are underway to bolster resident engagement, particularly concerning the residents' voice panel, which has seen a shortfall in representation.

During a meeting on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, councillors noted that the current number of subscribers to the residents' voice panel stands at 113, a figure moving in the right direction, according to Steve Tucker from Sutton Housing Partnership (SHP). However, he acknowledged an amber rating for the panel due to this shortfall. Councillor Barkham noted this amber rating for the residents' voice panel due to a shortfall in resident representation, with the target number of residents being 115.

To address the shortfall and enhance engagement, a community engagement officer has been appointed to support the panel's work. This role is crucial for activities such as community action days, community walkabouts, and ensuring resident-focused events are properly publicised. Furthermore, all new tenants are invited to join the panel during their onboarding process.

Colin Hawkins, Chair of the Sutton Federation of Tenants and Residents Associations, commented on the panel's development, stating that its effectiveness needs time to be established. He added that the panel is being developed into a useful forum for gathering information to benefit residents and services. This feedback is expected to help councillors improve communication with SHP, with the panel's input being integrated into decision-making processes. For example, the panel will be kept informed of improvements to the repair service.
