Barnet Council is to investigate the issue of individuals living in tents within the borough, following concerns raised at a recent committee meeting.
The Adults and Health Overview and Scrutiny Sub-Committee discussed the matter on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. During the meeting, Councillor Stock highlighted a specific incident involving a homeless individual with mental health problems living in a tent at Darlands Nature Reserve, which required the attendance of multiple response units. She also noted that there are approximately five individuals currently living in tents within the borough and inquired about potential support measures.
Councillor Beg shared a similar situation in her ward where an individual with mental health issues could not be housed due to an inability to live with others.
Ms. Wakeling stated that the council has a Homelessness Strategy and Homeless Action Barnet, and that the situation is usually complex, involving multiple partners to find a resolution. She indicated she would speak with colleagues about steps already being taken or that could be taken to address the issue.
