The Linford Christie Outdoor Athletics and Sports Stadium has officially completed its extensive capital programme, marking the end of a multi-phase renovation project. The final phase, which involved the re-surfacing of the 400-meter athletics track, has now been finished.
The re-surfaced track has received 'track mark' accreditation from England Athletics, signifying that it meets the required standards for athletics facilities. This accreditation is a key outcome of the extensive renovations.
The overall three-phase programme, which included refurbishments to changing rooms and the redevelopment of an artificial pitch, cost a total of £2,031,668. The Wormwood Scrubs Charitable Trust (WSCT) contributed £539,000 towards the project, with Hammersmith and Fulham Council providing the remaining £1,492,662 through various funding streams, including the King's Coronation Youth Fund and Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL).
The completion of these renovations is expected to lead to the development of a comprehensive programme of subsidized access to athletics for young people in the local community. Officers are collaborating with local sports groups to achieve this, aiming to boost participation in the sport.
A celebration event hosted by Thames Valley Harriers is scheduled for September 27th to mark the completion.
