Alexandra Palace is celebrating its commitment to accessibility and forging ahead with green initiatives, according to reports presented at the Alexandra Palace and Park Consultative Committee and the Alexandra Park and Palace Statutory Advisory Committee meetings on Thursday 17 July 2025.

Accessibility Award

Alexandra Palace has been awarded the Attitude is Everything Platinum Award, recognising its status as an industry leader in accessibility. This places the Palace alongside prominent venues such as the O2 and the Southbank Centre.

Green Initiatives

The Palace is also making strides in its commitment to environmental sustainability. Discussions are ongoing with the Greater London Authority (GLA) regarding Alexandra Palace's approach to net zero. The Palace has applied for the Zero Carbon Accelerator Scheme (ZCA) and the Green Finance Fund (GFF). The GLA has approved the two support packages in principle for the ZCA, and the details are being worked out. The objective of the first ZCA work package is to support the bid to the GFF, which involves quantifying the potential energy and carbon savings that replacement low-voltage switchgear could provide.

Beyond the CUFOS building, Alexandra Palace is considering energy efficiency upgrades across the site, including electrical infrastructure improvements, upgrades to switch gears and lighting, and replacements in the boiler house, where pumps drying hot water systems had been modernised. The North East Office Building (NEOB) is also mentioned as a potential creative learning hub.

Furthermore, the Haringey Community Carbon Fund has awarded a grant to the Trust to install secondary double glazing and draft proofing in the old station building (CUFOS). This project aims to reduce heat loss and improve the building's energy performance.

Alexandra Palace is also working towards the first level of the Theatre Green Book, an industry initiative for sustainable practices. Staff from several departments are working through the tool kits to establish the current strengths and weaknesses across three areas: Buildings, Productions and Operations. The next step is to formulate an action plan to achieve the Basic level by the end of the financial year.

Heritage and Conservation

Alexandra Palace is also focused on protecting its heritage assets. An LBC application for redecorations will be prepared, focusing on completing work on the East and West entrances, painting all external joinery heritage green. Other LBC applications are likely to be drafted over the summer to include lead capping to the parapet walls, lead detailing to the scrolls above the East Court entrance and secondary glazing to the CUFOS building.

Vital conservation work continues across the east-facing façade and wider site, with a focus on traditional masonry repairs. The team is also restoring and replacing heritage Windsor Park lamps with energy-efficient LED units.

New Partnership

The BBC Concert Orchestra has officially confirmed its partnership with Alexandra Palace as the Palace's first Associate Orchestra. This strengthens an already established relationship with the BBC which sees Friday Night is Music Night and Later with Jools Holland both recorded in the Theatre. The partnership will include performances and opportunities to rehearse in the venue. The BBC Concert Orchestra will also explore education opportunities for local communities through the Creative Learning programme.
