Earl's Court Road is set for a design overhaul of its shopfronts, aiming to create a unified and visually appealing high street. The shopfront design guide is intended to remove visual clutter that has proliferated over time with the erosion of the original shopfronts.
The Kensington and Chelsea Environment Select Committee discussed the Street Greening and Decluttering report at a meeting on Monday, 15 September 2025, where the shopfront design guide for Earl's Court Road was highlighted as a key initiative to remove visual clutter and bring a unified design identity to the area. The discussion took place at the meeting of the Environment Select Committee, detailed in the Public reports pack.
The bespoke guidance aims to assist the road's characterful shops and businesses, addressing the erosion of original shopfronts that has led to a proliferation of visual clutter over time. The council hopes to use funding made available by the previous government to invest in shopfronts and other initiatives that form part of the Earl's Court Action Fund. The Hogarth Road scheme is part of a holistic approach to Earl's Court Road complementing a programme of shopfront improvements in the vicinity together with bespoke Supplementary Planning guidance strengthens the greening approach and reinforces the Council's Amazing Spaces programme.
Prior to the report, officers engaged with shop owners and local businesses to understand the barriers and motivations to improve shopfronts. Officers proactively approached businesses when a unit changed hands and when planning applications were submitted within the District Centre. They then provided detailed design guidance on how to improve their shopfronts and signage, securing significant improvements for several units along the High Street.
