Islington Council is set to debate a motion aimed at bolstering the rights of private renters in the borough. The Public reports pack contains more information about the meeting.
The motion, scheduled for discussion at the council meeting on 18 September 2025, proposes a multi-pronged approach to support Islington's private renters. The meeting URL is available to view online.
The motion calls for the council to:
- Defend and expand licensing schemes ensuring safe, decent homes for all renters.
- Enforce the Islington PRS Charter rigorously, working with the Private Renters' Champion, tenants, landlords and the LRU, Renters' Rights London and ACORN to uphold its principles
- Campaign for stronger national reforms, including immediate abolition of Section 21, rent controls to curb excessive increases, and greater powers for councils to inspect properties and penalise rogue landlords.
- Boost tenant engagement, ensuring renters know their rights through targeted outreach.
- Publish an annual report tracking rental values, enforcement action, and tenant engagement to inform the council's work on supporting private renters.
The council meeting will cover a range of topics, including updates to the constitution, changes to members' allowances, and responses to questions from the Youth Council and the public. However, the debate on private renter rights is expected to be a key focus.
