Harrow Council is set to debate a motion condemning the deportation of legally settled migrants at its meeting on 27 November 2025.
The motion, put forward by Councillor Peymana Assad and Councillor Nitin Parekh, highlights the significant contributions of legally settled migrants to Harrow and the UK, specifically their contribution to the social, cultural, and economic life of the borough. It also emphasises Harrow's diverse communities and their enrichment of the local area and contribution to shared prosperity.
The motion was prompted by recent public statements, including those made by a spokesperson for Kemi Badenoch (Leader of the Conservative Party) and Nigel Farage (Leader of the Reform UK Party), which suggested a willingness to deport legally settled migrants.
The council believes that threats to deport legally settled migrants are unacceptable and undermine fairness, justice, and community cohesion. The motion states that all residents who have settled legally in the UK should be respected and protected.
The council resolves to:
- Publicly condemn any statements or policies advocating the deportation of legally settled migrants.
- Reaffirm Harrow Council's commitment to supporting its diverse communities.
- Write to the Home Secretary expressing the council's strong opposition to the deportation of legally settled migrants.
- Encourage national and local political leaders to uphold principles of fairness, legality, and respect for all residents.
