Barnet Council is set to observe a minute's silence in remembrance of the victims of a terrorist attack that occurred on Yom Kippur.
The motion, put forward jointly by Councillor Barry Rawlings, Councillor Peter Zinkin, and Councillor Mark Shooter, was passed at a council meeting on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
The attack, which took place on Thursday, 2nd October 2025, targeted the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation on Yom Kippur, resulting in fatalities and injuries. The motion acknowledged the profound psychological impact on Jewish communities and the bravery of volunteers who responded to the incident.
It specifically noted The bravery of the Jewish community's volunteers and wider congregation that prevented further fatalities and injuries,
and highlighted The vital role of the Community Security Trust in training and organising those volunteers.
Barnet Council resolved that a minute's silence would be held at the next Cabinet meeting to honour the victims. Furthermore, the council committed to redouble the council's efforts in working with our government, law enforcement and community partners to keep the Jewish community safe, as we should keep all communities.
