Haringey Council's Cabinet has approved a draft Older People's Housing Strategy for public consultation. The strategy, which aims to provide a coordinated approach to housing for older residents over the next fifteen years, was given the green light at a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.
The draft strategy aligns with the Council's existing commitments in its 2024-29 Housing Strategy and 2024-26 Corporate Delivery Plan. It seeks to improve outcomes for older people by providing clear direction across the Council's roles as a landlord, housing developer, planning authority, and provider of housing-related social care and support services. The strategy aims to establish a coordinated approach to housing for this demographic, aligning housing and planning priorities with social care, the NHS, and public health initiatives.
Councillor Sarah Williams, Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning and Deputy Leader, presented the draft strategy, highlighting its importance in ensuring the Council delivers best value and enhances the lives of older residents.
The decision to approve the draft strategy for consultation was made to establish a clear, coordinated approach to housing for this demographic. The alternative of not adopting a strategy was rejected, as it was deemed to undermine the Council's ability to provide best value and could negatively impact outcomes for older people.
Following the consultation period, a revised draft of the strategy will be presented to the Cabinet for adoption. The full draft strategy can be viewed here.
