Haringey Council has approved a one-year extension to its lift maintenance contract with Jackson Lift Services Limited, ensuring the continued provision of essential services while a new, long-term contract is procured.
The decision, made by Councillor Sarah Williams, Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning, will see the contract extended from April 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027. The value of the contract will increase by £358,324.49, bringing the total to £3,261,254.49. This increase includes a previous variation of £98,345.00 for the first-year extension in 2025 to 2026.
This extension is the second and final one-year option available under the current agreement. The council stated that the extension is necessary to maintain statutory service provision and to allow for the re-procurement of a new lift maintenance contract. The need for this second extension arises from the council's strategy to manage its resources effectively by utilising extensions to stagger the re-procurement of major contracts,
thereby avoiding the co-termination of multiple significant agreements and reducing future pressure on resources. The council is aiming to procure the new long-term contract by April 1, 2027.
The service is crucial for ensuring compliance with regulations such as the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) and the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER).
Alternative options, such as undertaking the maintenance in-house, were deemed not feasible or cost-effective due to the specialist skills and equipment required. The council also highlighted that not extending the contract was not a viable option due to its statutory obligation to provide this service.
During this extension period, Jackson Lift Services Limited's performance and expenditure will be continuously monitored using monthly key performance indicators (KPIs) and financial tracking tools. Progress and any issues will be reviewed during monthly contractor meetings.
The extension is expected to have a positive impact on residents, particularly older people, families with young children, and those with mobility challenges, by ensuring reliable lift operation and minimising service disruptions.
