Hillingdon Council's Cabinet Member for Planning, Housing & Growth, Councillor Steve Tuckwell, has agreed to further investigate traffic management measures for Newnham Avenue in Eastcote following a petition from concerned residents. The decision for further investigation into a timed one-way system on Newnham Avenue was made after discussions where the petitioner emphasised the daily challenges faced by pupils and families.

The petition highlighted significant traffic congestion, parking pressures, and road safety concerns on Newnham Avenue, particularly during school peak periods. The road serves approximately 650 pupils, aged between 3 and 11, across the nursery, infant and junior schools, as well as their families, making it a consistently busy school route rather than an occasional issue. The road was described as narrow and the combination of two-way traffic and parked vehicles creates difficulties for passing vehicles and safe pedestrian access to the schools. Conditions had steadily worsened over several decades due to increased traffic congestion, parking pressures, and road safety concerns.

During a petition hearing on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the lead petitioner described near misses, including a vehicle mounting the pavement, and instances of aggressive driver behaviour. The petitioner stated that the issue had worsened over several decades due to increased traffic and that the current situation was no longer suitable for the level of demand.

Councillor Tuckwell decided that further investigation may be warranted for a timed one-way system on Newnham Avenue. The Transport Planning and Projects Team Leader advised that while a timed restriction might not be feasible, alternative measures like a one-way system could be explored. It was noted that any changes would require careful assessment of wider impacts on surrounding roads. The meeting also noted national guidance for the implementation of one-way restrictions and previous work by the Council's School Travel and Road Safety Team.
