Hillingdon Council has provided 510 social housing lettings over the past year, with 271 of these being council homes allocated to local residents. Councillor Nick Denys, Cabinet Member for Planning, Housing & Property, confirmed these figures during a council meeting on Thursday, September 24, 2026.
Councillor Denys acknowledged the significant challenges Hillingdon residents face in accessing affordable housing, citing a chronic shortage of social housing in Hillingdon and across most London boroughs and many other UK cities.
He reiterated the council's commitment to addressing this issue and providing homes for those struggling to get onto the housing ladder or secure rented accommodation.
The council's social housing allocation policy prioritises applicants based on a range of needs. The Council carefully considered medical, disability related and welfare needs in line with social housing allocation policy,
the meeting information stated. Medical evidence is assessed by an independent medical advisor, and having a medical condition does not automatically guarantee additional housing priority. The council evaluates whether an applicant's current accommodation is having a direct and significant impact on their health, disability or welfare.
In exceptional circumstances, where professional evidence indicates an applicant's needs cannot be met within their standard bedroom entitlement, a larger property may be considered. These exceptional cases typically involve multiple serious factors affecting the household, particularly where safeguarding concerns or risks to life are present, and must be supported by relevant and up-to-date professional evidence.
