Sutton Council has elected Councillor Muhammad Sadiq as its new Mayor and Councillor Chris Manasour as Deputy Mayor for the 2026-2027 municipal year. The council convened on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, to formalise these appointments, which are a significant part of the council's calendar.
Councillor Sadiq, who was nominated by Councillor Edward Joyce and seconded by Councillor Sam Martin, expressed his gratitude for his election. He outlined his commitment to champion and support the local community, promote the borough, and raise funds for his chosen charities: The Kidney Fund at St. Helier Hospital and St. Raphael's Hospice in Cheam.
The selection process for Mayor involves a nomination and requires embodying the spirit of the community, dedication, infinite patience, and a deep pride in the area.
The Deputy Mayor, Councillor Chris Manasour, was appointed by the newly elected Mayor. Beyond ceremonial duties, both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are expected to actively support the local community and promote the borough.
Councillor Sadiq also thanked the outgoing Mayor, Councillor Louise Phelan, and Deputy Mayor, Councillor Cumar Sahathevan. During her term, Councillor Phelan attended various community events, including coffee mornings for older people and visited Your Space in Cheam to discuss park cottage restoration plans. She also attended the 85th Anniversary Dinner of 350 (Carshalton and Wallington) Squadron ATC and the Air Training Corps, and officially opened a new Lidl store in the High Street with students from Robin Hood School. Fundraising efforts for her charities included a Karaoke Night and a Quiz Night.
