Councillor Lisa Jane Moore has been elected as the new Mayor of Bexley Council for the Municipal Year 2026-27. At the Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, Councillor Moore accepted the nomination, which was the only one put forward for the position. She outlined her theme for the year: Samunya Bexley or Bexley Together.

Councillor Moore, who represents Longlands ward, previously served as Deputy Mayor. Her nomination was put forward by Councillor Nick O'Hare, who highlighted her dedication to the ward and her background in journalism and public service. Councillor Frazer Brooks seconded the motion, emphasizing her commitment to supporting people and her ability to unite the council.

Councillor Moore's theme, Samunya Bexley or Bexley Together, is inspired by the South African word Samunya, which appears in several South African languages, including Zulu, Isiswati, and Isikosa. It translates to we are one or we are together and signifies that a person's identity and well-being are deeply connected to the community around them. Described as more than a word. It's a statement of unity, of togetherness and of shared humanity, the theme emphasizes that togetherness isn't something that we feel, it's something that we do. It highlights everyday choices that we make to look out for one another, to lift each other up and to ensure that no one in our borough is left to struggle alone.

During her acceptance speech, Councillor Moore announced that her chosen charities for the year would be Crossroads Care South East London, Truly Beloved, and the Diabetes UK Bexley Support Group. These charities embody her theme through their work:

  • Crossroads Care South East London: This charity represents togetherness at its most compassionate, ensuring that no unpaid carer has to carry that responsibility alone. Funds raised will provide respite, emotional support and practical help to enable unpaid carers and those they care for to remain connected, healthy, and independent.
  • Truly Beloved: This organisation shows togetherness for children and young people, standing beside families navigating the challenges of disability and special educational needs. Funds will be used to remove barriers and help build a Bexley where every child is valued, included and given the opportunity to shine by funding therapies, equipment, and family support.
  • Diabetes UK Bexley Support Group: This group represents togetherness in its purest form, with people supporting people through difficult times. It ensures no family in Bexley has to face that journey alone by offering community, understanding and practical guidance.
