Councillor David Leaf has been appointed as the new Leader of Bexley Council, following a confirmation at the council's Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, May 27, 2026. The Conservative councillor, who represents the Blendon and Penhill ward, will serve in the role until the council's annual meeting in May 2030.
Councillor Leaf's appointment was confirmed by a council with a significant Conservative majority. The political composition at the time of his confirmation comprised 29 Conservative councillors, 9 Labour councillors, and 7 from the Reform Group. Councillor Leaf was nominated for the leadership by Councillor Nick O'Hare and seconded by Councillor Dave Curtis.
Following his appointment, Councillor Leaf announced his Cabinet and their respective portfolios. The meeting also saw the review and approval of the council's committee structure and membership sizes. During this discussion, Councillor Cameron Smith voiced concerns about the number of opposition members needed to call in executive decisions, noting his disappointment that the Labour and Reform UK groups were grouped together.
