Listed building consent granted for Notting Hill Gate Library steps
Kensington and Chelsea Council's Planning Applications Committee has granted listed building consent for the repair of historic steps leading to the Notting Hill Gate Library at 1 Pembridge Square. The steps were found to be in a dilapidated and dangerous condition, necessitating significant reconstruction to preserve the building's special architectural and historic interest.
During the meeting on Tuesday, 23 June 2026, councillors were informed that the steps had been covered by temporary boarding for many years. This boarding had exacerbated their deterioration by trapping moisture and preventing routine maintenance. The consent granted allows for the removal of this boarding, the carrying out of repairs, and the reinstatement of the steps to a condition where they can be used and maintained normally.
No objections were raised regarding the proposed repairs. Furthermore, no letters were received supporting the application for the repairs to the steps at 1 Pembridge Square.
The work will benefit the building by reinstating a positive and attractive feature that has been hidden for many years, thereby better revealing the significance of the Grade II listed building. Conditions have been imposed to secure details of the materials and methodology to be used for the repairs. This includes the submission of samples of materials and a method statement describing the techniques to be used for repair and reconstruction.
