Residents of Eastcroft House have formally objected to the reintroduction of communal food waste bins, citing a litany of previous negative experiences including severe vermin infestations, swarms of flies, and strong odours.

A petition, signed by 47 residents, was presented to Harrow Council at a meeting on Thursday, July 2, 2026. The petition calls for the council to pause the reintroduction of the bins and meet with residents before proceeding. The document detailing the meeting's agenda can be found here.

Residents detailed concerns about persistent issues such as severe infestations of rats and mice, swarms of flies, and strong odours from decomposing food waste. These issues led to significant public health concerns for residents and visitors. The petition also highlighted instances of overflowing and poorly maintained bins, and the misuse of communal bins by non-residents, contributing to further contamination and waste management problems.

Councillor Marilyn Ashton, Deputy Leader, acknowledged the petition.
