Hackney Council's Cabinet has approved funding for the refurbishment of the Joe White Gardens basketball court, allocating £74,143 in external funding from the Veolia Environmental Trust for the project. The decision was made during a Cabinet meeting on Monday, June 29, 2026.
The refurbishment aims to improve the existing court, which is nearing the end of its lifespan, and ensure its continued contribution to physical activity within the local community. The project, which has been co-designed with community stakeholders who use the space regularly and have campaigned for its improvement, will involve resurfacing and remarking the court. Beyond these core improvements, specific attention will be given to addressing tree root damage that is cracking the ground and creating a trip hazard.
The total cost of the project is £94,143. The Council will contribute £15,000 from its Parks Infrastructure budget, with Hoopsfix providing a £5,000 contribution. The Veolia Environmental Trust grant of £74,143 will be supplemented by these partner funds, securing a net grant of £67,000 for the Council.
The refurbishment works are expected to be completed by September 2026. Upon completion, the refurbished court will be a free-to-use facility, providing long-term sporting assets for the community. Furthermore, the project will include free community basketball training sessions aimed at boosting local youth health and well-being. The activation of the space and delivery of these sessions by partners are scheduled for March 2027.
This initiative is anticipated to significantly impact youth participation in basketball and enhance overall health and well-being in the local community.
