Hammersmith and Fulham Council's Planning and Development Control Committee has granted advertisement consent for the retention of 18 non-illuminated double-sided advertising banners in Bishop's Park and on Stevenage Road. The consent is valid for five years, expiring around July 2031.
The decision was made at a meeting on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, where the committee approved the banners despite 152 objections from the public. Concerns raised by objectors included retrospective application issues, lack of transparency, visual clutter, and the commercialisation of public space.
Officers noted that the banners, measuring 1.6m in height by 0.6m in width and sited at a height of 2.8m, were deemed acceptable in visual amenity terms. They concluded that the banners preserve the character and appearance of the Bishop's Park conservation area and the registered historic park and garden, and are of an acceptable scale and number
. Furthermore, they would not have a detrimental effect on neighbouring residential amenities or highway safety.
A similar application for 18 banners on Stevenage Road, between Bishop's Park Road and Langthorne Street, was also approved. Eighty-two objections were received for this application, raising similar concerns.
Advertisement consent for the banners was granted subject to conditions, including the five-year time limit and the requirement for the development to be carried out in accordance with specific drawing numbers.
