Hackney Council is set to install heat pumps in nine schools across the borough, marking a significant step towards its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. The project is expected to take two years, with completion expected around March 2027.
The Hackney Council’s Cabinet Procurement and Insourcing Committee discussed the award of a contract for the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) 4 project at a meeting on Monday 07 July 2025. The project, estimated to cost £10.3 million, will be funded by a £6.6 million government grant and £3.7 million council capital.
The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) aims to help public sector organisations reduce their carbon emissions by funding energy efficiency and heat decarbonisation measures. The Hackney Council project will involve installing heat pumps in nine schools, replacing existing gas-powered heating systems with a more sustainable alternative.
