An emergency generator for vital medical imaging equipment at a London hospital has been granted planning permission after initial concerns were addressed.
The Kensington and Chelsea Planning Applications Committee approved the installation of the generator at 180-186 Brompton Road, London, SW3 1HQ, during a meeting on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
The generator is intended to provide a backup power supply for critical imaging equipment, including MRI and CT scanners, which have stringent power resilience requirements.
The committee had previously deferred the decision to seek further information regarding the generator's siting, screening, and necessity. The primary concerns raised by the committee centred on these aspects, leading to the initial deferral. Additional details provided, including a generator section, acoustic specifications, and an emergency generator alternatives report, satisfied the committee's concerns.
The report detailed mandatory NHS requirements for secondary power supplies for such facilities and explained why alternative solutions were not suitable.
Conditions have been attached to the permission to manage noise emissions and air quality impacts.
