York Hall Leisure Centre Set to Reopen in New Year After Major Investment
York Hall Leisure Centre is poised to reopen its doors to the public in the new year, following significant investment and refurbishment works aimed at preparing the nearly 100-year-old facility for its next century of operation.

During a Tower Hamlets Council Human Resources Committee meeting on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, Ellen Clarke, Director of Human Resources, confirmed the anticipated reopening in early 2027. The closure has provided a crucial opportunity to invest in the building's fabric, with capital works and improvements being brought forward.
These enhancements include a focus on the fabric of the building
to ensure it has a really good look and feel
for customers upon reopening. While the exact date is contingent on the completion of these works, Ms Clarke expressed optimism, acknowledging that unforeseen issues can arise with older buildings. The council is committed to having the facility ready for public use as swiftly as possible.
Staff who previously worked at York Hall Leisure Centre have largely been redeployed to other leisure facilities across the borough. A skeleton staff remains on-site to manage essential maintenance. Communication regarding the reopening timeline and any phased investment plans will be shared with staff and customers.
The investment in York Hall is part of a broader commitment to enhancing the council's leisure services and providing valuable community assets. Depending on the extent of investment brought forward, some improvements may be phased and continue beyond the initial reopening.
