Bexley Police are set to address road traffic law enforcement issues following discussions at the Transport Users' Sub-Committee meeting on Thursday, 17 July 2025. The discussion follows concerns raised by residents regarding speeding, two-wheelers, and inadequate vehicle lighting.

Inspector Leah Macdonald from the Bexley, Greenwich and Lewisham Safer Transport Team was invited to the meeting to discuss new issues affecting the borough and answer questions from the Sub-Committee. The discussion is a continuation of previous meetings, where Councillor Richard Diment raised concerns, based on resident feedback, about the lack of enforcement of road traffic law, including issues with speeding, two-wheelers, and inadequate vehicle lighting.

Several actions were agreed upon to improve road traffic law enforcement:

  • Councillor Diment will share a list of locations with Inspector Macdonald where the lack of road traffic law enforcement is an issue.
  • Inspector Macdonald will share details of community roadwatch schemes operating in the borough with the Sub-Committee.
  • Inspector Macdonald will identify a contact for the Chairman to further discuss the issue of fixed speed camera locations.
  • The Chairman will provide feedback to Inspector Macdonald about the Council's new CCTV system and camera locations.
  • Inspector Macdonald will report back to the Sub-Committee about the safety and enforcement of delivery drivers, linking to the issues raised by Councillor Diment. She stated she would investigate the matter and provide an update at the next Sub-Committee meeting.
  • Andrew Bashford will share details of the Police and Council contacts working on improved cycling signage. The Council is collaborating with the Police to enhance cycling signage, aiming to improve enforcement capabilities through clearer and more comprehensive signage.

The Safer Transport Team focuses on crime, disorder, and anti-social behaviour on and around public transport routes, particularly bus routes that service the town centres in the borough. The Police Service Update presented to the Transport Users' Sub-Committee outlined these ongoing efforts.
