Tottenham residents will have to wait longer for upgrades to Tottenham Hale Station, as Haringey Council's Planning Sub Committee has approved a section 73 application to scrap the planned footbridge in favour of pedestrian and cycle network improvements on Ferry Lane. The decision, made at a meeting on Tuesday 29 July 2025, marks a significant shift in the station's development plans, citing changed circumstances since the original planning approval in 2013.
The approved variation replaces the requirement for a new station access point and footbridge from Hale Village to Tottenham Hale Station with pedestrian and cycle network improvements on Ferry Lane and ancillary works. The decision follows officers recognising that while the bridge was desirable, it was not essential, and that changes in circumstances meant the original design was no longer viable.
Councillor Gordon, Cabinet Member for Placemaking and The Local Economy, attended the committee to speak in support of the application, stating that Tottenham Hale was becoming the destination that the Council always intended it to be, however it had to have the appropriate infrastructure.
The committee noted that officers had consulted 2,700 residents, receiving 46 objections and 5 letters of support. The consultation comments from the Ferry Lane Action Group were summarised in the report, with some welcoming the proposals and others providing further suggestions. The design of the bus stop bypass was also discussed, with officers stating that it was in line with guidance and would undergo final detailed design and engagement with the Council. Officers clarified that the risk of pedestrian injuries at bus stop bypasses was very low, based on TfL findings in 2024.
While the footbridge has been scrapped from the immediate plans, TfL has stated a longer-term aspiration to deliver a bridge should funding become available in the future. The committee was told that TfL remains committed to collaborate to deliver a link bridge.
