Wandsworth Council's Planning Applications Committee has confirmed two Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) in Balham and South Balham, providing protection for mature trees and preserving the character of the local area.
The Council's Tree Officer inspected both trees and reported that they were healthy and in good condition and suitable to be covered by a Tree Preservation Order.
The committee, which met on Wednesday 20 August 2025, voted to confirm the following orders:
- TPO 507/2025 - 70 Thurleigh Road SW12 8UD (Balham)
- TPO 508/2025 - Rear of 48 Manville Road SW17 8JN (South Balham)
TPO 507 protects a Holly Oak tree in the front garden of 70 Thurleigh Road, Balham. The order was initially made following an application for the demolition of the existing house and its replacement with a new house, including re-landscaping. The council's tree officer deemed the works to the tree unjustified, leading to the TPO being issued. The site is located within the Nightingale Lane Conservation Area, further justifying the protection of the tree.
TPO 508 protects an Ash tree adjacent to the garages to the rear of 48 Manville Road, South Balham. The order was made following an application to fell the tree to allow for repairs to the garages and the surrounding asphalt surface. The site is located in the Heaver Estate Conservation Area. While an objection was received from the freeholder of the garages, the council felt the loss of the tree was unjustified, stating that the tree could be retained and similar works to provide garages could be effected without its loss.
