Wandsworth Council is set to address the complex and interconnected nature of ongoing and planned transport works across the borough, aiming to mitigate a potential domino impact
on residents and businesses.
Councillor Zara Wiles raised concerns about the cumulative effect of various transport schemes and major works, highlighting the displacement of traffic caused by bridge closures and other disruptions. The domino impact
of works is being considered in hotspot areas
such as Lower Richmond Road, Putney High Street, Battersea Bridge Road, and Tooting Broadway. The meeting also mentioned the impact of bridge closures, such as Hammersmith Bridge and Albert Bridge, on traffic displacement.
In response, Councillor Nick Austin, Cabinet Member for Transport, acknowledged the issue and confirmed that officers have been tasked with considering the projected domino impact
of works, particularly in these identified hotspot areas
. These areas are particularly vulnerable due to the significant traffic displacement caused by ongoing bridge closures.
The council is also working with Transport for London (TfL) on several schemes, including proposals for Battersea Bridge and Putney High Street. Regarding Battersea Bridge Road, it is noted that it is a TfL road and TfL has made signalling changes, with this being an ongoing process. A meeting with TfL has taken place concerning schemes including a one-way system in Putney High Street and Battersea Bridge Road. Designs for Putney High Street are subject to safety audits by TfL and independent auditors. TfL is also responsible for all traffic lights in the capital and will be scrutinizing the design and operation of junctions.
Discussions have involved potential one-way systems and signalling changes. For Putney High Street, a trial one-way system on Wise Road is underway, with residents to be consulted before any permanent changes. The relocation of the bridge crossing further south is also a proposal. A forthcoming site visit with councillors and officers is planned to assess the situation.
To mitigate the disruption, the council is also developing a Lane Rental Scheme. This scheme will charge utilities and other works promoters for occupying traffic-sensitive roads at busy times, incentivising them to reduce disruption and complete works more efficiently. The council has also supported bids for Albert Bridge and Vauxhall Bridge.
