Haringey Council is shifting its focus to preventative care with a £43m investment from the Better Care Fund (BCF). The Haringey Health and Wellbeing Board met on Thursday 26 June 2025 to discuss the BCF, alongside the Haringey Adult Social Care Carers Strategy and the Haringey Alcohol Strategy and Action Plan.
The BCF allocation for 2025/26 is £42,991,774, an increase of £741,976 from the previous year. This funding aims to support residents in living independently and to shift resources from treating sickness to preventing it. Key metrics for 2025/26 include reducing avoidable emergency admissions for those aged 65 and over, ensuring timely hospital discharges, and reducing long-term care admissions.
The board also discussed the Haringey Adult Social Care Carers Strategy, noting that approximately 16,891 residents in Haringey (7.2% of the population aged five and over) provide unpaid care, according to the 2021 Census. The strategy's vision is that All Carers, of all ages, are recognised, respected, and supported.
The mission focuses on ensuring carers feel valued, have access to information and resources, receive timely support, maintain their wellbeing, and are empowered to balance caring responsibilities with personal goals. Key priorities include improving access to information, strengthening carers' rights and resilience, and creating inclusive services.
Furthermore, the board addressed the Haringey Alcohol Strategy and Action Plan 2025-2029. The strategy aims to tackle alcohol-related harm through prevention, harm reduction, and treatment. In Haringey, there were 23 alcohol-specific deaths and 62 alcohol-related deaths in 2023. The overall cost of alcohol harm is estimated at £143.3 million a year. The strategy is divided into sections based on critical life stages: Start Well, Live Well and Age Well, and Healthy Place. Objectives include raising awareness of alcohol-related harms, ensuring quality services, and strategically regulating access to alcohol.
