Newham Council's Strategic Development Committee has approved plans to expand the Holiday Inn Express in Canning Town, located at 1-3 Silvertown Way. The approval, granted on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, will see the addition of 153 bedrooms to the existing hotel, bringing its total capacity to 273.

The refurbishment and extension project also includes new restaurant and bar facilities, along with associated plant, car and cycle parking, and landscaping. The development aims to bolster the visitor economy and create jobs in the area.
During the meeting, concerns were raised regarding the architectural detail and cladding appearance. A condition has been imposed requiring materials to be presented for approval. While specific materials were not detailed, the applicant mentioned plans for a metal clad building
and using that metal material, but using it in a very modern way with the introduction of the colour.
The expansion is expected to support the visitor economy and generate jobs. The project will see a significant reduction in on-site car parking, from 55 spaces down to 11, alongside improvements to the pedestrian environment and new cycle parking infrastructure. The provision of micro-mobility bays was also discussed.
The scheme incorporates energy-efficient technologies, including air source heat pumps and solar panels, and aims for a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating.
