Several City of London Wards have formally registered their opposition to the establishment of new Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), citing concerns over additional financial burdens and a lack of democratic accountability.
The Ward of Dowgate recorded its opposition to a proposed BID covering its area, stating that businesses are already facing mounting costs and high taxation. The Wardmote resolved to place on record its opposition and urged its representatives to vote against any measures supporting the BID.
Similarly, the Ward of Vintry formally opposed the proposed Riverside Business Improvement District. Their resolution highlighted concerns about an additional mandatory levy, the potential duplication of services already provided by the City of London Corporation, and a perceived lack of direct democratic accountability in BID governance structures. The Wardmote called upon its alderman and common councillors to represent this opposition and vote against the BID's creation, endorsement, or funding.
The Ward of Vintry's opposition specifically states that the governance structures of business improvement districts lack the direct, historic, and transparent democratic accountability to businesses, workers, and residents that is provided by the City's unique business franchise, and its wardmotes, aldermen, and common councillors.
