Redbridge Council is set to enhance its recycling efforts with the introduction of a new food waste collection scheme, a move expected to significantly boost the borough's recycling rate.
The plan was discussed and agreed upon by the Clean and Green Committee during their meeting on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. The new food waste collection scheme is scheduled to be introduced later this year

Currently, Redbridge's recycling rate hovers around 30%. Councillor Jo Blackman, Cabinet Member for Environment and Neighbourhoods, expressed confidence that the new food waste collections, alongside changes to dry recycling collections, will lead to substantial improvements. We are confident that we'll see some quite significant improvements with that when we introduce the food waste collection scheme,
Councillor Blackman stated. The council is confident that these changes will help improve our recycling rates

Councillor Blackman also highlighted that the council is moving towards a single wheelie bin for dry recycling. This new bin will provide more capacity than the current two boxes
, offering a significant upgrade from the existing two-box system.
