Hounslow Council is set to address the growing issue of nitrous oxide use within the borough, following concerns raised by residents at a recent Heston and Cranford Area Forum meeting.
A resident, involved with the Heston Action Group, highlighted the increasing discovery of nitrous oxide cylinders during litter picks, stating it is a significant problem in their ward. The resident also noted a recent fatality in Birmingham linked to its use, where two young people in a car using nitrous oxide ran across a junction, causing a fatal accident. This prompted a desire to prevent similar incidents in their local area.
The issue had previously fallen off the area action plan, and a request was made for it to be reinstated. Councillor Shantanu Rajawat, Leader of the Council, acknowledged the resident's concerns. While efforts are made to update the action plan, it was indicated that it is not widely used. Residents were urged to use the 'Let's Talk' pages to voice concerns, which would help councillors and officers focus on these issues. The request to add the issue back to the area action plan was met with an affirmative response: But can we make sure that's added back onto the area to the action plan? Thank you. Yes.
The meeting, held on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, also covered a range of other local issues, including community projects, waste management, and road safety. The date of the next meeting has been set for Thursday, 12 November 2026, where the action plan is expected to be further improved over the coming months.
