Wandsworth Council is set to tackle persistent odour and noise issues emanating from the Smuggler's Way Waste Transfer Station, following concerns raised by local residents and councillors.
During a meeting of the Environment Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, Councillor Paul White highlighted the ongoing problems in his ward, St. Mary's. In response, Councillor Brooks, the Cabinet Member for the Environment, acknowledged the issues and outlined immediate and long-term solutions.
To address the immediate problem of fetid bilge water from barges, measures such as hosing them out and the use of a new bacteriological agent have been implemented. These recent measures were introduced during the summer months, with the hope that they are improving the experience of local residents. The outcomes of these interventions are still being assessed.
Looking ahead, the Western Riverside Waste Authority is entering a new contract procurement phase for 2032. Councillor Brooks assured the committee that resident concerns will be a priority in this process, with the aim of achieving a fully enclosed site with enhanced odour control. The meeting did not provide a specific timeline for the implementation of long-term solutions beyond this procurement phase.
