Wandsworth Council is preparing to launch a new grant scheme to assist residents in installing electric vehicle (EV) charging cable channels across pavements. The initiative, backed by a £175,000 grant from the Department for Transport, seeks to offer a safe and accessible method for homeowners to charge their EVs without creating trip hazards.
Residents who wish to benefit from the scheme have been able to register their interest online. Those who have already done so will be contacted by the council once the scheme is operational.
Councillor Jenny Yates had previously highlighted the scheme at a Transport Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting, noting cross-party support but also a delay in its implementation. Councillor Nick Austin, Cabinet Member for Transport, clarified that the scheme was not classified as urgent and its introduction was postponed due to the pre-election period and a subsequent change in administration. He expressed confidence that the scheme will be up and running this year.
These efforts to enhance transport infrastructure are being undertaken as the council navigates significant financial pressures, including reduced central government funding and the requirements of the London Plan. Despite these fiscal challenges, the council remains dedicated to improving transport links and promoting sustainable travel choices for its residents.
