Redbridge waste collection staff are set to benefit from a finalised union deal, according to a report presented at the Shareholder Reference Group meeting on Wednesday, 17 September 2025.
The agreement, which will come into effect in September or October 2025, finalises the terms of the Union Recognition Agreement. Redbridge Civic Services (RCS) Ltd is also in the process of negotiating a workforce pay increase for 2025/2026 with the union, aligning with the increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). While the specific percentage or amount is still under negotiation, the aim is to match the rise in the CPI.
A recent incident where a driver sustained significant injuries to his right arm after being assaulted by a member of the public has highlighted the need for greater respect towards waste collection staff. The police are actively progressing with the case.
RCS responded swiftly and compassionately to the assault on the driver, ensuring medical care, police involvement, and emotional support were provided. Employees have approached the council about the way the public interacts with the workforce and LBR are pleased to report that a positive social media campaign has been developed with the council's communication team as a result. The theme of the campaign is 'behind the uniform is a person', encouraging the public to be kind. The council would like to thank RCS for their contribution to this campaign.
In addition to the social media campaign, several other measures are being implemented to improve the safety and respect afforded to waste collection staff. These include:
- Adding a CCTV logo to staff uniforms, intended to help de-escalate potential conflicts with the public.
- Reviewing risk assessments.
- Revising the seatbelt policy to comply with legal provisions while emphasizing the importance of seatbelt use.
