Redbridge Council is set to join the Local Government Association's (LGA) 'Debate Not Hate' campaign, taking a firm stance against abuse and intimidation directed at councillors, officers, staff, and contractors.
The decision is slated for discussion at the council meeting on Thursday, 26 June 2025, where Councillor Vanisha Solanki, Deputy Leader of the Council & Labour Group and Cabinet Member for Finance, will move a motion to adopt the campaign. The motion acknowledges the rising concerns about the safety and well-being of public servants, noting that abuse and intimidation of councillors undermines democracy, deters individuals from standing for election, and weakens public trust.
The council's commitment includes a zero-tolerance approach to abuse, strengthening reporting mechanisms for harassment, and a review of councillor information publication. They also plan to collaborate with the police and the LBR Community Protection Taskforce on safety concerns. The motion proposes writing to local MPs and government ministers to advocate for action against abuse and intimidation, drawing on the findings of the Jo Cox Civility Commission.
In addition to the 'Debate Not Hate' motion, the council will also consider motions regarding e-scooter regulation and proposed government cuts to disability benefits. Councillor Jo Blackman, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, is scheduled to move a motion calling for improved regulation and enforcement to address the dangerous use of illegal e-scooters and e-bikes. Councillor Rosa Gomez is scheduled to move a motion expressing opposition to proposed government cuts to disability benefits.
The meeting will also address changes to the council's constitution and committee appointments. The council is undertaking work to refresh and modernise the constitution, with support from the Centre for Governance and Scrutiny. Changes to appointments to committees that were agreed at the annual council meeting on 15 May 2025 will also be considered.
