Redbridge Council is set to modernise its constitution, alongside discussions on motions addressing hate speech, e-scooter regulations, and disability benefit cuts at a meeting scheduled for Thursday, 26 June 2025, according to council documents.
The council will review and redraft its constitution with support from the Centre for Governance and Scrutiny. This refresh will occur in two phases, with the first focusing on immediate changes to Council Standing Orders, Committee Procedure Rules, and procedures related to grievance and disciplinary arrangements for senior officers. In addition to constitutional matters, councillors will consider motions on several pressing issues. Councillor Vanisha Solanki, Deputy Leader of the Council & Labour Group and Cabinet Member for Finance, will move a motion to join the LGA's Debate Not Hate campaign, addressing abuse and intimidation of councillors. Councillor Jo Blackman, Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability, is scheduled to move a motion regarding e-scooters, calling for improved regulation and enforcement. The motion highlights that in 2022, there were over 1,400 casualties involving escooters across the UK, including 12 fatalities.
Councillor Rosa Gomez will move a motion opposing proposed government cuts to disability benefits, resolving to work with local disability organisations and call on local MPs to oppose the cuts.
