Wandsworth Council's Conservation and Heritage Advisory Committee has expressed strong disappointment
after planning permission was granted for alterations to Chivalry Hall, despite unanimous objections from the committee itself. The decision to approve changes to the building, located at 29A-29B Chivalry Road, SW11 1HT, was made by delegated authority.
The committee's objections centred on significant heritage concerns, particularly regarding proposed changes to the building's fenestration and the addition of balconies. These alterations were viewed as potentially damaging the understanding of the hall's original use. Specifically, concerns were raised about unacceptable changes to the fenestration, particularly the Chivalry Row frontage, the removal of lancet windows on the side elevation, and changes to the size of windows and addition of glazing bars.
The committee also had strong reservations about the fenestration of the garden-facing wall and the depth of the proposed balconies.
The proposed alterations to Chivalry Hall include replacement windows and doors, a new roof covering with rooflights, solar panels, and an air source heat pump. The plans also encompass associated landscaping and refuse storage, the erection of a single-storey side extension, and the installation of balconies. These changes are in connection with the reconfiguration of existing dwellings within the hall.
Despite the committee's detailed objections, which were outlined in the report on recent decisions considered at their meeting on March 10, 2026, their comments were reportedly rejected. The committee's strong reservations and unanimous objections were noted with strong disappointment
in the minutes of the meeting, which can be found in the Public reports pack.
Further details on the applications considered can be found in the 26-85 Applications document, and the 26-86 Decisions document provides information on other decisions made.
The committee's remit is to advise on matters relating to conservation and heritage, and their input is typically sought on applications that could affect the character or appearance of listed buildings or conservation areas. The meeting agenda frontsheet for this session is available here.
