A Wandsworth pub has been granted an extended licence until 2:30 am on Fridays and Saturdays, despite concerns from residents about anti-social behaviour and noise. The decision was made by the Licensing Sub-Committee on Thursday, July 23, 2026, for the venue Mezzanine, located at Unit 4, 20 Totterdown Street.
Residents had voiced fears that the extended hours would exacerbate existing problems with noise and public nuisance from patrons leaving the venue late at night. Ria Patel, a local resident, told the committee that the dispersal of intoxicated patrons from the area had already led to disturbances and that extending the hours would prolong these issues. Residents have previously experienced late night disturbances and antisocial behaviour
from patrons leaving the premises and groups congregating in the surrounding streets during the early hours of the morning,
impacting their ability to sleep and enjoy their home.
Specific issues mentioned include noise generated by customers leaving the premises late at night,
groups talking, smoking, waiting for taxis and are intoxicated,
and conversations that don't stand out in the early hours of the evening definitely stand out in that time.
The venue has a history of noise complaints, with residents reporting late night disturbances and antisocial behaviour
and making noise complaints this year and last year concerning late night traders in the market.
The existing closing time is already problematic for residents living nearby,
Ms. Patel stated. Extending the sale of alcohol and late-night refreshment until 2:30 am, with customers remaining in the area until around 3:00 am, would inevitably worsen the situation.
However, the applicant, represented by Mr. Nicolò Scaravato, argued that the extra hour was crucial for attracting DJs and promoters and that they were committed to promoting culture and decency. He highlighted measures being taken to mitigate noise, including soundproofing works, and assured the committee that security would be increased.
The applicant is covering the old backside. The one that is going towards your area with the wood panel. And then I'm going to cover it with the sound absorbing sponge, the one used for, for like a registration studio.
The expected effectiveness is that those sponge, they are made to stop. So it's a bit odd, but essentially the frequency, the sound has frequency. So high pitch as high frequency, and then you have medium frequency and low frequency. So the low frequency are the ones that really penetrate and probably you might be hearing in your bedroom at night, not the high frequency. So the sponge are specifically for those.
The committee approved the variation, extending the hours for the sale of alcohol and regulated entertainment to 2:30 am on Fridays and Saturdays. In this context, 'regulated entertainment' includes live and recorded music.
The application for Mezzanine was to extend the hours for the provision of regulated entertainment (live and recorded music) by one hour on Fridays and Saturdays, from 01:30 to 02:30.
The applicant stated that they strictly always stick with drum and bass, techno and house events
as this is what they are trying to promote.
Conditions imposed include the requirement for SIA-registered door supervisors to be present from 9 pm, the use of body-worn cameras by supervisors, and that all drinks be served in non-glass containers from 10 pm. The new licence conditions mandate SIA-registered door supervisors to be present from 21:00 hours on Fridays and Saturdays until all patrons have left, and for body-worn cameras to be used by these supervisors.
The operating schedule also includes CCTV provisions
and an incident log shall be kept at the premises and made available on request to Metropolitan Police, the Licensing Authority or other Responsible Authorities.

Additionally, External doors are to be kept closed from 22:00 hours, except for immediate access and egress.
The applicant also stated, Once at midnight we shut the door, we let everybody out to the main street, not on the residential.
Staff will ensure customers or potential customers do not congregate outside the premises or cause noise nuisance to residents living in the vicinity of the premises.
The Licensing Sub-Committee considered Temporary Event Notices (TENs) during February and March 2026, during which the premises operated until the proposed hours without any reported incidents or issues.
They also considered CCTV evidence
which shows clearly that the event was well-managed, had forced security, all registered with the body cam.
Additionally, several traders
provided statements where they say is all fabricated
regarding accusations made by one objector.
