Wandsworth Council's Planning Applications Committee has confirmed a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) for a Canary Island Date Palm in Nicosia Road, safeguarding the significant tree.
The committee met on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, to discuss several planning matters, including the confirmation of this TPO. The decision to protect the Canary Island Date Palm at 12 Nicosia Road (TPO 516/2025) was made despite an objection citing potential damage to boundary walls and drains.
The objector raised concerns that the Canary Island Date Palm tree was causing damage to the front and side boundary walls and to the drains.
They also stated the tree is planted too close to the house for this species.
However, the council's tree officer deemed the tree healthy and in good condition, making it suitable for protection. The report noted that the tree is prominently visible and has significant public amenity value for those living in and travelling through the area.
Regarding future works on the tree, the council's tree officer reported that if the tree is definitively found to be causing structural damage at a future date a TPO application can be made for its removal or pruning.
This confirmation of the TPO would not preclude any future applications and would secure replanting if it were to be conclusively proven that the tree is causing damage.
The meeting also addressed TPO 517/2025 for an Indian Horse Chestnut tree at 57-61 West Hill Road. No other trees in Nicosia Road or the surrounding area were mentioned as being under consideration for TPOs at this meeting.
