The pedestrianisation of Old York Road in Wandsworth is nearing completion, marking a significant milestone in the council's efforts to promote active travel and enhance public spaces. Construction, which began in September 2024, is expected to wrap up around mid-July 2025, with a final phase continuing until the end of the year.
The Wandsworth Transport Committee received an update on the project, along with other major schemes, at its meeting on 19 June 2025. The meeting agenda and reports pack are available online.
The Old York Road project aims to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment with in-situ greenery and sustainable drainage. However, highway renewal works will be paused at Ferrier Street to allow Network Rail to undertake station works, expected to begin in May 2026 and last for 12 months.
Other projects discussed at the meeting included:
- Burntwood Lane: Construction began in January 2025 on a walking and cycling corridor scheme, featuring new zebra crossings, a toucan crossing, continuous raised crossings, footway widening, and segregated cycle lanes. Completion is expected by Spring 2026.
- Queenstown Road: Works to improve cycling facilities between Chelsea Bridge and Queen's Circus started in March 2025. Phase 1 is due to be completed by the end of the year, with Phase 2 expected by Spring 2026. The committee also discussed proposals for Queenstown Road south of Battersea Park Road, including removing the northbound bus lane between Southolm Street and Silverthorne Road and introducing a northbound stepped track cycle lane.
- Totterdown Street: A public realm improvement scheme trial began in May 2024 and has been running for 12 months. The trial involved creating a pedestrian space and a one-way section, with positive feedback from residents. A permanent scheme is being designed, with potential commencement of phase 1 works in Autumn 2025.
The council also reviewed traffic and engineering petitions, including one concerning pedestrian crossings at Honeywell School. After investigation, a design has been prepared and will be taken forward in 2025.
