Plans to enhance accessibility and sustainability at Putney Methodist Church have received unanimous backing from the Wandsworth Conservation and Heritage Advisory Committee.
The committee convened on Thursday, January 8, 2026, to review several planning applications, including proposals for the church situated on Upper Richmond Road. The meeting agenda and public reports pack can be found here.
Key approved changes include the installation of a new accessible entrance ramp and steps, alongside replacement entrance doors featuring power-assisted operation. An internal glazed lobby will also be created. The plans further encompass the relocation of a brick pier, the insertion of a new opening in the perimeter wall and railings, and the addition of a new noticeboard.
Environmentally, the church will benefit from a new shared bin store, raised solar panels on the south-facing roof slope, and an air source heat pump installed within the church tower. Crucially, the addition of photovoltaic panels is anticipated to generate sufficient electricity to eliminate the need for the existing gas boiler, offering significant environmental and potential cost savings.
The committee unanimously supported the application, with no objections raised and four letters of support received. The Putney Society also fully endorsed the proposal, following prior discussions with community groups and the society by the applicant.
While expressing their support, the committee did request further consideration regarding the design of the ramp to ensure it harmonises with the existing car park entrance. A comment was also made about the necessity of screening the base of the photovoltaic panels to deter birds.
