Archaeological concerns have been raised over plans for a new housing development on land rear of 2-28 Bickley Street, SW17 9NF, with the Wandsworth Conservation and Heritage Advisory Committee stressing the need for further investigation into the site's archaeological value before any construction can begin.
The committee discussed the proposal to erect three two-storey dwellings, along with associated bin stores, cycle parking, and landscaping, at their meeting on Thursday, January 8, 2026. The full details of the application can be found in the Public reports pack.
During the discussion, members of the committee questioned whether the site was located within an archaeological priority area. Officers stated they were unsure and that this type of assessment is conducted externally by the Greater London Archaeological Advisory Service (GLAAS).
Concerns were also raised regarding historic boundary walls. It was noted that one identified wall had already been demolished in 2017. In relation to the proposed design, the committee suggested that fascia boards might be better served by a simple brick design, as this would be an improvement on the initially proposed fascia boards.
While the committee felt the application was not detrimental to the Grade I listed building, as the view down the alleyway was unlikely to be worsened, they emphasised that the archaeological value of the site required further investigation before any development could proceed.
